Revelation 20 opens after Christ's victory over the beast and false prophet. John sees an angel coming down from heaven with the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain. The order matters. The beastly powers have been overthrown in Revelation 19; now the dragon himself is restrained. The action begins from heaven, not from human progress, political reform, or moral improvement within the old order. Revelation 20:1 serves the chapter's larger movement: heaven restraining Satan after Christ's public victory, holding final judgment and final hope in the same frame. The placement of Revelation 20:1 after Revelation 19 matters because the visible return of Christ has already overthrown the beastly coalition before this final judgment sequence unfolds. For readers who have watched evil seem to flourish, Revelation 20:1 says God will not merely win; He will win in a way that vindicates His mercy and truth.

The key and chain are symbols of authority and restraint. A spirit-being is not held by literal iron, and John is not asking the reader to imagine a physical chain strong enough for Satan. The point is stronger than that. Heaven has power to restrict the deceiver completely. The key recalls authority to open and shut; the chain says that Satan's activity during the thousand years is not merely reduced but decisively limited. Satan is confined to the wreckage of his rebellion with no nations left to deceive. Revelation 20:1 also protects the reader from treating the millennium as detached chronology; it is part of the moral settlement of the controversy over God's throne and character. The surrounding vision also keeps Revelation 20:1 connected to hope: the old order is being judged so the new creation can arrive without deception, death, or fear.
